I’m 39 years old and grew up in Colorado. I live just outside Chicago with my husband, two dogs, two cats, a bird and an iguana. (Let’s just say that 1/2 of these pets came with the house…long story.)
I am a graphic designer.
I hate pompous jerks, the telephone, and chicken gristle.
I love cooking, all things French, and a really good turkey sandwich.
Life is good!
Hey, did you redraw yer picture? Looks pretty decent, actually.
I picked up this book once called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. It’s for long-haired leaping gnomes like me who can’t even draw stick figures. There are all these exercises where you draw stuff upside-down and the like to “bore” the left side of your brain. There are a bunch of “before” and “after” drawings by this teacher’s students. You wouldn’t believe the same people made both sets of drawings, only a few weeks apart.
No - it’s the same one - I did change themes, so maybe it looks different because of that?
One of my stepdaugters took an art class a few years ago where they had to draw a picture from a photograph upsidedown. It was amazing! What’s up with that?
i drew a picture of some guy sitting in a chair as one of the exercises. It’s a pretty detailed picture. As I understand the theory, if you look at the picture right side up, your left brain tells your right brain “shut up, I know how to do this,” and then makes you draw real crappy kinds of symbolic shortcuts of a chair and a face and hands etc. because that’s how the left brain gets it done. Your right brain on the other hand is actually way better at spatial perception and abstract reasoning, hence is perfectly suited to “seeing” and drawing but, because it is mostly non-verbal, gets bullied by the left side. Anyway, when you turn the thing upside down that you want to draw, it “doesn’t make sense” to the left side, which gets bored and basically throws up it’s little brain hands, and tells the right side “you go ahead if you want, I’m outta here.”
Hmmm… that’s interesting. Coming from someone who is about 85% right-brained, I wonder what would happen if I were to do this exercise. My left brain would probably explode as it doesn’t get a lot of use anyway. (Try watching me calculate a complicated dinner check, and you’ll see what I mean.)
Did you fall off the face of the earth or something? I’m missing your sarcastic humor - come back!
Hi Pateras
No - I am here! I have just been totally behind the eight ball with work and trying to get my house together for “spring” (a relative term here in Chicago this year) and basically have just been kinda lazy. I have about four half-done posts that I will get to over the weekend - I promise!
Thanks for the comment!
Hey! I enjoyed reading your blog very much…I’m moving to Chicago for college this fall. And i like everything french too! I even signed up for an 8:15am MWF french class…if that isn’t love, I don’t know what is
I know, I know, you’re so excited about going to the World’s Largest Block Party tonight at Old St. Pat’s that you just haven’t been able to write. But starting tomorrow, you’ll be back at it, right? Please!
I’m back! I was kind of in the Wine Zone Vacation for a few weeks, but I am back!
